then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I'd say zero.”
He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”
어느 날 나는 지각을 했는데 과속으로 경찰에게 단속을 받게 되었다.
경찰관은 내 셔츠에 학교 이름이 쓰여 있는 것을 보고 교사라는 것을 알게 되었다.
“저는 수학을 가르쳐요.”라고 설명했다.
그는 웃으면서, “좋아요. 문제를 하나 드리죠. 어떤 선생님이 고속도로에서 25킬로나 속도를 위반했습니다.
속도위반 1 킬로당 12달러, 게다가 40달러의 법정 벌금, 그리고 보험료가 추가됩니다. 전체 얼마를 지불해야 할까요?” 라고 추궁을 했다.
나는 “그것을 모두 더하고 내가 받은 낮은 월급을 빼고 거기다 수학을 싫어하는 아이들의 수만큼 곱한 다음
이 세상에 선생님 없이 존재하는 아이들은 하나도 없다는 사실을 곱하면 제로가 됩니다.”라고 대답했다.
그는 나의 면허증을 돌려주며, “사실상 수학은 내가 제일 싫어하는 과목 이예요. 과속하지 말고 천천히 다니세요.”라고 했다.
