party. (마치 파티라도 있는 양 컵들이 깨끗이 정돈되어 있었다.)

원래 clearing은 고층건물들 사이에 있는 빈 공간 (vacant spot)을
의미하는 말이지만 이 노래에서는 홀로 외로운 싸움을 하고 있는 주
인공이 서있는 '사각의 링' 한가운데라고 보는 것이 타당하다.
＊ a fighter by his trade
trade는 '직업(occupation)'이라는 의미로도 자주 쓰이는 말이다.
He follows the trade of fiction.
(그는 소설을 쓰는 것을 직업으로 하고 있다.)
I'm a fixer by trade.(제 직업은 수리공입니다.)
여기에서는 a boxer 를 다시 한번 풀어 쓴 것으로 '다시 말해 싸우는
것을 직업으로 갖고 있는' 정도의 의미가된다.

을 지를 때까지 그를 흠씬 두들겨 패주었던 권투글러브에 의한 상처

기력을 낭비해 왔다. squander 하면 '~을 낭비하다(waste)'라는 말인
데 이 노래에 나오는 mumbles(의미없이 중얼거리는 말), 즉 확실하지
않은 한줌의 공허한 말들만 믿고 링 위에서 저항하며 싸워왔다는 뜻
이다.
＊ for a pocketful... 의 for는 in exchange for (~과 교환하여) 정도
의 의미로 볼 수 있다.
＊ Such are......jest - 앞 문장의 mumbles의 내용을 설명하는 말이다.
싸우고 있는 선수들을 북돋아 주기 위한 각가지 약속들(promises),
예를 들면 시합에서 이기면 어떤 보상을 해줄 것이라는 등. 그 중에
는 거짓말(lie)도 있고 그냥 농담삼아 지껄인 말(jest)도 있었을 것
이다.
＊ Still, a man......rest -그럼에도불구하고(still) 이 권투선수는
자기 귀에 달콤하게 들리는 말은 믿고 다른 말들은 무시해버린다는
의미. 이 노래를 만든 Paul Simon은 he 대신 'a man'이라는 표현을
씀으로써 단지 이 권투선수 뿐만이 아니라 인간들 모두가 이러한 단
순한 속성을 가지고 있음을 간접적으로 묘사하고 있다.
＊ In the company of strangers - 낯선 사람들과 함께 있다, 즉 편안치
못한 분위기 (the atmosphere is uncomfortable).
＊ running scared - (흔히 죄를 짓거나 잘못을 한 후)겁에 질린.
When a man does something wrong and can't take responsibility,
all he can do is running scared. (어떤 사람이건 간에 뭔가 잘못
을 하고 책임을 질 수 없게 되면 두려움 속에 떠는 길 밖에는 없을
것이다.)

등가 (red light district)를 말하는데 여기에서의 "come on"은 매춘
부(whores)가 손님들을 유혹할 때 쓰는 말이다. 이들은 흔히 다음과
같은 말로서 사람들을 유인하기 마련이다.
" Hi baby, are you looking for something? Can I help you? Come
on,baby! "

'밥' is the most important food and Koreans have it for breakfast
lunch, and dinner, in contrast to western meals where certain fo-
ods are designated to one of the three meals.
밥은 가장 중요한 음식이며 한국인들은 밥을 아침, 점심, 저녁 식사로
먹지요. 이는 어떤 특정한 음식을 세 끼 식사 중 한끼의 식사로 지정
해서 먹는 서양식과는 차이가 납니다.
Because rice itself tastes bland it is consumed with '김치' '국'
and other side-dishes called '반찬' that give flavor to the meal.
쌀 자체는 맛이 밋밋하여 식사에 맛을 가미하는 김치가 국을 함께 먹
는데 이를 반찬이라고 합니다.
Koreans eat a whole bowl full of rice and they consider it to be
the main food in any given meal. Without rice, one cannot have a
legitimate meal.

The next important food and porbably the most famous Korean food
is '김치.'

'김치' is an essential part of a Korean meal and this serves as
one of the '반찬' to '밥.'
김치는 한국인의 식사에 꼭 있어야 하는 것이며 밥에 따르는 반찬 중
하나 입니다.
'김치' is basically made up of cabbages seasoned with red pepper
powder, salt, garlic, ginger, and a few other ingredients.
기본적으로 김치는 배추에 고춧가루, 소금, 마늘, 생강, 그리고 몇가
지 다른 재료로 양념한 것을 가리킵니다.
Thirdly '국' or soup is usually seved with rice and '김치' It can
be prepared to taste bland or hot and a very popular soup called
'된장국' is made up of '된장' or soybean paste, tofu, and a wide
assortment of vegetables.
세번째로 국은 밥, 김치과 함께 상에 올라갑니다. 국은 순하거나 매운
맛으로 요리할 수 있으며 가장 유명한 것으로 된장국이 있는데 이는
된장, 두부와 여러가지 종류의 야채로 만듭니다.
'국' can be had as a '반찬' or it can be mixed with rice and con-
sumed simultaneously.
국은 반찬으로 먹을 수 있으며 밥과 섞어서 먹을 수도 있습니다.
These three foods '밥' '김치' and '국' are considered to be esse-
ntial components of a Korean meal.
밥, 김치, 국의 세 가지 음식은 한국인의 식사에 가장 필수적인 것들
입니다.
Along with these foods however, many other '반찬' made of mostly
vegetables and some meat, crowd the table and offer alternative
flavors to the meal.
그러나 이런 반찬과 더불어 야채나 고기로 만든 반찬들이 있는데 그반
찬들은 식탁을 가득 채우고 식사에 또 다른 맛을 줍니다.
