(1) 지난 사월 춘천에 가려고 하다가 못 가고 말았다. 나는 성심여자대학에 가보고 싶었다. 그 학교에 어느 가을 학기, 매주 한 번씩 출강한 일이 있다. 힘드는 출강을 한 학기 하게 된 것은 주 수녀님과 김 수녀님이 내 집에 오신 것에 대한 예의도 있었지만 나에게는 사연이 있었다.
→ 「춘천에 가려고 하다가…」는 술어동사로 intend를 쓴다면, 춘천에는 결국 가지 못하고 말았으므로 과거완료형을 써야 한다. 실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
→ 「못 가고 말았다」는 「실현되지 못했다」로 풀어서 옮길 수 있다. 「실현하다」는 뜻은 materialize, realize, actualize, fulfill 등으로 나타낼 수 있다.
→ 매주 한 번씩 출강한 일이 있다: I had given weekly lectures.
→ 나에게는 사연이 있었다: I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.
(2) 우리들은 여섯 시가 지나서 전주에 도착했다. 거기서 나와 영옥이는 일반버스로 갈아타고 다시 한 시간을 더 가야 했다. 나는 바로 시의 버스정류소로 가려했지만, 돌남이가 때가 되었으니 시내 들어가서 저녁을 먹자고 했다. 사실은 내가 저녁을 먹자고 해야 인사가 될 판이어서, 나는 그가 하자는 대로 했다.

→ 「하자고 했다」는 suggested가 알맞다. suggest가 이끄는 종속절의 술어동사는 원형을 쓰도록 한다.
→ 내가 저녁을 먹자고 해야 인사가 될 판이어서…: I was well aware that it was I who should have suggested having dinner together,…
→ 나는 그가 하자는 대로 했다: I readily accepted his idea.
(ANS) We arrived at Chonju a little after six o'clock. Yong-ok and I had to take a local bus from there and travel one more hour. I wanted to go to the bus station right away but Tol-nam suggested that since it was supper-time we all go into the town and eat something. I was well aware that it was I who should have suggested having dinner together, so I readily accepted his idea.
(4) 학교에서의 영어교육은 1960년대초에 이르러서야 얼마쯤 질서가 잡혀갔다. 영어교수법을 전공하기 위해서 대학교수들이 해외에 파견되고, 고등학교와 대학에 어학실습실이 설치되고 the audio-lingual method가 주창되고 여러 대학에 어학연구소가 설치된 것이 1960년대초이다.
→ 「1960년대초에 이르러서야…」는 It was not until the early 1960s…의 구문을 이용한다.
→ 「학교에서의 영어교육은 약간의 질서가 잡혀갔다.」는 Korea를 주어로 삼고, see를 술어동사로 삼아서 다음과 같이 옮길 수 있다. Korea saw the situation of the teaching of English at schools in some order.

(ANS) It was not until the early 1960s that Korea saw the situation of the teaching of English at school in some order. It was then that college teachers began to be sent abroad to study the teaching of English, language laboratories were set up one after another in high schools and colleges, the audio-lingual method was advocated, and language research institutes were set up in many universities.
[比較] technic, technics, technique, technology
technic과 technics는 잘 쓰이지 않는다. 형용사로서 technic은 폐어가 되어 technical(공업에 관한, 공예의, 전문적인)이 대신 쓰이고, 명사로서는 대체로 technique(기술, 기법, 기교)가 대신 쓰인다. ‘과학 기술, 기술학’을 의미하는 경우에는 technology로 바뀌어졌다.
technique는 특히 예술의 ‘기술, 기법, 기교’를 가리키는 데에 쓰이는 말이며 미국 속어 용법에서 ‘사교적 솜씨’를 의미한다.
He has the greatest technique with women.
technology는 ‘과학 기술, 공업 기술, 공예학’을 말한다.
He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
또한 예술, 과학의 ‘전문어, 술어’를 가리키기도 한다.
