pupil(생도)은 어리거나 전공 학과 때문에, 선생의 세밀한 감독 밑에 있는 이를 말한다. 영국에서 pupil이라고 하면, Eton, Harrow 같은 사립학교(public school, 대학 입학 예비 교육을 주로 하는 중·고등학교), 또는 미국의 고등학교(high school)에 해당하는 중등학교(secondary school)에 다니는 이를 가리킨다. 미국에서 pupil은 흔히 초등학교에 다니는 이에 한해 쓰인다. 나이 여하를 불문하고 전공학과 때문에 pupil이라고 불리는 이(주로 대학생)는, an art pupil, a music pupil처럼, 흔히 전공하는 학과 이름을 붙여 말한다.

student는 고등 교육 기관에 다니는 이를 말하지만, 미국에서는 고등학교의 학생도 가리키는 수가 있다.

미국에서 student는 또한 어느 한 문제에 전력하는 연구가를 말한다.

scholar는 초등학교, 주일학교 따위의 생도를 말한다.

이 뜻으로는 pupil과 동의어지만, 특별히 대학에서 장학금(scholarship)을 받고 있는 학업이 우수한 특대생을 가리킨다. 이 뜻으로는 미국에서보다는 영국에서 더 흔히 쓰이고, 미국에서는 흔히 장학금 명칭과 함께 쓰인다. 또한 scholar는 학문에 전심하는 이, 학식이 있는 이, 「학자」를 의미하며, 이것이 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 현대적 뜻이다.
disciple은 a disciple of Jesus처럼 성서의 영향을 크게 받아서, 어원적인 pupil의 뜻으로는 영어에서는 별로 쓰이지 않는다. 때로 옛 시대와 관련해서, 또는 유머러스한 용법에서 쓰이지만, 그런 경우에도 스승의 가르침에 대한 헌신적인 신봉의 뜻을 품고 있다.

The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.
열 살 된 한 소년이 끔찍한 교통사고에서 왼쪽 팔을 잃었음에도 불구하고 유도를 배우기로 결심했다.
소년은 한 나이든 유도 사범과 교습을 시작했다.
소년은 잘하고 있었고, 그래서 그는 훈련을 받은 지 세 달이 지난 후에도 사범이 왜 그에게 한 가지 동작만을 가르쳤는지 이해하지 못했다.

완전히 이해하지는 못하면서, 소년은 훈련을 계속했다.

Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
“Sir, how did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for one reason,” the teacher answered.
“You've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.
And the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”
집으로 돌아오는 길에, 소년과 스승은 모든 시합에서의 모든 동작을 검토했다.

A few days ago, my best friend died.

Doing what's right is an easy and ordinary thing.
도리란 쉽고도 평범한 것이다.
