When elephants want to eat, their long noses help.
They use their trunks to pull down the branches and pull off the fruit and leaves.
With their long noses, elephants put food into their mouths.
An elephant can give itself a bath with its trunk.
It takes water in through its nose.
Out the water comes, all over the elephant's body.
Elephants, however, can't always find clean water.
Then they take a mud bath.
The trunk is used to put on mud.
When the elephant has a cut, the cool mud makes the cut feel better.

Unfortunately, in the past 30 years the number of elephants has decreased markedly.
There are a few reasons for this.
Some have died in accidents.
Sri Lanka has many gem pits, and when baby elephants become separated from their parents,
they sometimes fall into one of them.
Other elephants are wounded when they step on spited barriers put up by villagers.
If their wounds become infected, they can die.
They can also die from gunshot wounds because although it is against the law, people try to shoot them.

I hear the elephant eating fruit just outside the cottage.
Gently pushing aside the mosquito net, I rise from the bed and walk quietly through the dark to the washroom, which has a tiny window.
All I can see in the window is a large eye, like a whale's eye, blinking at me in the morning light.

Scientists believe that elephants become alcoholics for the same reason some people do.
They want to forget their everyday lives and problems, and getting drunk allows them to do that, at least for a short time.
The scientists have found that if elephants are put in stressful situations, they will consume a lot more alcohol than usual.
Sadly, these stressful situations are becoming more and more common in the wild.

Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.
