- mumbo jumbo: 사투리, 이해하기 힘든 말(language that cannot easily be understood, jargon)
ex) Have you tried to read and understand all that mumbo jumbo in the insurance policy?
- wishy-washy: 우유부단한, 약한(undecided, weak, not definite and clear)
ex) My boss is very wishy-washy. He has trouble deciding who should do what, and he doesn't give clear orders.
- wheeler-dealer: 수완가, 책략가(a person who is always making business deals and trying to get the best deal)
ex) Mr. Park is big-time wheeler-dealer in real estate. He keeps buying and selling stores and hotels all over the country.

pupil(생도)은 어리거나 전공 학과 때문에, 선생의 세밀한 감독 밑에 있는 이를 말한다. 영국에서 pupil이라고 하면, Eton, Harrow 같은 사립학교(public school, 대학 입학 예비 교육을 주로 하는 중·고등학교), 또는 미국의 고등학교(high school)에 해당하는 중등학교(secondary school)에 다니는 이를 가리킨다. 미국에서 pupil은 흔히 초등학교에 다니는 이에 한해 쓰인다. 나이 여하를 불문하고 전공학과 때문에 pupil이라고 불리는 이(주로 대학생)는, an art pupil, a music pupil처럼, 흔히 전공하는 학과 이름을 붙여 말한다.

fluctuate는 어원적으로 ‘흐름, 물결’의 뜻으로 바다 물결 또는 그런 물결 위에 떠있는 물건이 쉴 사이 없이 오르락내리락하는 것을 나타낸다. 그러나 글자 그대로의 뜻으로 쓰이는 일은 지금은 드물고, 주로 강한 바람에 밀리는 파도의 운동을 암시하는, 아주 불규칙하게 교대되는 운동을 가리킨다.

undulate는 물결 같은 운동을 암시하는 데에는 fluctuate보다 이 말이 훨씬 많이 쓰인다. 또한 비유적으로는 급격한 변화를 암시하지 않고, 꾸준히 흐르는 물의 물결을 연상시켜서, 계속적으로 출렁거리는 잔물결을 암시하는 경우에 흔히 쓰인다.

tell은 단순한 일반적인 말, 어떤 상황이나 사건의 사실 또는 진상을 전하는 것을 말하며, tale과 어원이 같다.

relate는 사람이 몸소 겪은 또는 본 것을 조리 있게 이야기하는 것을 암시한다.
relate the story of one's life/ relate an experience/ Relate your dream to us.
recount는 상세한 사항을 하나하나 열거하거나 언급하거나 언급하는 뜻을 많이 품고 있어서 이 동사는 보통 복수의 목적어를 취한다.
recount one's adventures/ recount the events of the day/ He recounted all the happenings of the day.
narrate는 한 사건의 상세한 사항을 그것이 일어난 순서대로 이야기하는 것을 말한다. 이야기의 구성(plot)을 발전시키고, 차차 서스펜스를 높이고, 클라이맥스로 옮겨가는 소설의 기교를 사용하는 것을 암시한다.

report는 남에게 알리기 위해서 자기가 조사한 것 또는 목도한 것을 recount하는 것을 말한다.

till이 더 오래된 형태, 이것을 ‘till, 'til로 철자하는 것은 비표준어이다. 어느 말이나 전치사로 쓰여서, Wait till tomorrow처럼 할 수도 있고, 절을 도입하는 접속사로, A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다. 대체로 until은 글머리에, till은 주절 다음에 오는 종속절에 흔히 쓰인다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
till, until이 이끄는 절은 그때가지 한 동작이나 상태가 계속되는 것을 나타낸다. 따라서 last, remain, wait 따위 계속을 의미하는 동사와 흔히 어울려 쓰인다. 주절의 동사는 어떤 시제든지 취할 수 있다. 미래의 일에 관해서 말할 때, 종속절의 동사는 현재 또는 현재완료를 취해서 ‘비가 그칠 때까지 기다려라’는 Wait till the rain stops 혹은, Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. 따라서 과거의 일에 관해서 말할 때에는 종속절의 동사는 과거 또는 과거 완료 시제를 취해서, ‘그는 비가 그칠 때까지 기다렸다’는 He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. 그러나 It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. 이 경우 영국에서는 till(또는 until)의 그릇된 용법으로 치지만, 미국에서는 확대된 용법으로 인정하고 있다. 이 점에 관해서 She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.

뜻으로 미국 사람들은 I'm finished 또는 I'm washed-up,

사업 실패로 좌절하는 사람에게 Don't give up.
Wait till your ship comes in.라고 하면 '포기하지마,
행운이 찾아올 때까지 기다려' 의 뜻이 된다.
