In colonial America, people generally covered their beds with decorative
quilts resembling those of the lands from which the quilters had come.
Wealthy and socially prominent settlers made quilts of the English
style, cut from large lengths of cloth of the same color and texture
rather than stitched together from smaller pieces. They made these until
the advent of the Revolutionary War in 1775, when everything English
came to be frowned upon.

Rather, they were made of a top layer of woolen or glazed worsted wool

The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed
and fired again. For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the
bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later burn off
in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the

The results of five-year breast-cancer-detection project indicate that
mammo- graphy, or breast X-raying, can detect very early cancers in
younger women as well as in those over 50, according to a report in Ca,
a journal of the American Cancer Society. Mammography detected nearly 90
percent of the 3,557 cancers uncovered through the project, which
involved annual X-rays and physical examinations of more than 280,000
women aged 35 to 74. Moreover, many of the lesions revealed by
mammography were very small cancers, previously shown to be curable in
up to 95 percent of cases.
