David was a young man who worked in an office in a big city. His hobby
was trout fishing, but he did not often get a chance to practice it.
Then one summer he decided to have a holiday in a beautiful place in
the mountains where there were a lot of streams.
"I ought to be able to have some good fishing there," he said to himself.
The first morning after he arrived, he walked to the nearest stream
with his fishing-rod.
He saw an old man with his rod standing beside the water.
David said to him, "Good morning, sir. Is this a private stream?"
The old man answered that it was not.
David said, "Why don't you fish here with me, sir?"
The old man answered with a smile, "I should like to, but I'm sorry I can't."
David then said, "Well, it won't be a crime if I catch some fish here,
will it?"
"Oh, no," answered the old man, "it won't be a crime, but it will
certainly be a miracle."
대이빗는 대도시의 사무실에 근무하는 청년이었다. 그의 취미는 송어
낚시였는데 별로 할 기회가 없었다.
어느 여름 그는 개울이 많은 아름다운 산 속에서 휴가를 보내기로 결심했다.
"거기라면 낚시질을 신나게 할 수 있을 거야."라고 그는 생각했다.
도착한 날 아침 그는 낚시대를 들고 가까운 개울로 갔다.
한 노인이 물가에 낚시대를 세워놓고 있는 것을 보았다.
대이빗이 말을 걸었다. "안녕하세요, 여긴 개인 소유지입니까?"
노인은 그렇지 않다고 대답했다.
대이빗이 말했다. "왜 낚시질을 하지 않습니까?"
노인은 웃으며 대답했다. "그러고 싶지만 유감스럽게도 그럴 수가 없다네."
그러자 대이빗이 말했다. "여기서 물고기 몇 마리 잡는다고 죄가 되지는
않겠지요?"
"아, 물론 아니지," 노인이 대답했다. "죄는 되지 않지만 기적일 거야."
My son, Scott, an insurance broker, loves ocean fishing and takes his
portable telephone along on the boat. One morning we were drifting
about ten miles offshore as Scott discussed business on the phone.
Suddenly his rod bent double, and the reel screamed as line poured off
the spool. Scott was master of the situation. "Pardon me," he told
his customer calmly. "I have a call on another line."

가지고 간다. 어느 날 육지에서 10마일쯤 떨어진 곳에서 스코트는 전화로

스코트는 상황에 잘 대처했다. "죄송합니다," 그는 고객에게 차분히
말했다. "또 다른 전화가 왔어요."
While holding a fishing rod on the river bank, a little girl suddenly
felt something and saw the fishing rod bowing like a question mark. She
grasped it tightly as a powerful fish took her line. The stones on the
river bank rolled under her feet, and she was being pulled into the
river. The seven-year-old girl looked around in fear, but couldn't see
anybody. Though she tried hard to pull the fish towards her, she was
pulled deeper into the river. She was about to be drowned by the
creature.

봤지만, 그녀는 더 깊이 강으로 끌려 들어갔다. 그녀는 고기 때문에 막
익사하게 될 순간이었다.

된다. 낚시바늘(hook),낚시줄(line)그리고 봉돌(sinker)을 통째로 삼키는
고기라면 완전히 용궁에 까지 딸려 가지 않으면 다행이리라 '완전히','통째
로'라는 의미의 표현이 'hook,line and sinker'이다.
