Health is generally regarded as a private property. There have indeed been
slogans which have emphasized this, often inaccurately. It is not true, as
sometimes claimed, that "health is wealth." There are many healthy people
who are not wealthy and also the other way around.
Another slogan is to the effect that life is not worth living without good
health. Certainly it is true that good health contributes greatly to the
joy of living and should be preserved and cherished. At the same time there
are many handicapped persons who have been able to make a good life for
themselves and to set a notable example to their fellow human beings by
the courageous way in which they have faced and conquered disability,
disease, and suffering. Obviously it is foolish to sacrifice health
needlessly. It is just as unwise to lie down and give up when your health
is impaired.
일반적으로 건강은 개인의 소유물이라고 한다. 이점을 강조하는 말들이 많지만
꼭 들어맞지 않는 경우가 많다. 흔히 주장하는 "건강은 재산이다."라는 말은
맞지 않는다. 건강하지만 부유하지 않은 사람이 많고 그 반대되는 경우도
마찬가지이다.
건강하지 못하면 인생을 살 가치가 없다는 취지의 말도 있다. 건강이 인생을
즐기는데 큰 역할을 하므로 건강을 유지하고 소중하게 여겨야 하는 것은
틀림없는 사실이다. 그러나 신체부자유자들 중에 훌륭한 인생을 살았고
신체적 결함, 질병, 고통을 용감하게 극복하여 다른 사람들에 모범을 보인
경우가 많다. 쓸데없이 건강을 버리는 것은 분명히 어리석다. 그러나 건강을
잃었다고 드러누워 절망하는 것도 마찬가지로 현명하지 못하다.
