[比較] bring, fetch, carry, take
fetch는 「…에 가서 가지고 오다」라는 뜻을 나타낸다. 다시 말해서 무엇을 가지고 오기 전에 일단 그 곳을 떠난다는 뜻을 내포한다.

bring은 다만 「가지고 오다」는 뜻으로 「…가서」란 뜻은 내포하지 않는다.

carry는 흔히 무엇인가를 신체의 일부(특히 손)를 이용해서 운반하는 경우에 쓰인다.
take는 「가지고 가다, 데리고 가다」란 뜻으로 bring의 반대어가 된다.

여기서 room을 '공간'이라고 생각하면 된다.

* beat it 이라고 하면 많이 들어본 말이긴 하지만 알고 보면
생각했었던 거와 전혀 다른 의미를 지니고 있음을 알게 된다.
예를 들면 미국에 이민온 지 얼마 되지 않는 교포 청년이
아파트를 구하러 다니다가 어느 집 앞에서 고약한 개 한 마리와
마주쳤다. 개는 청년을 보고 마구 짖어 댔다. 청년이 개한테
겁을 주기 위해 개를 발길로 차는 시늉을 하니까 개는 뒤로
물러서면서 더 짖어 댔다. 이때 그 집에서 한 노파가 나오더니
'beat it'이라고 소리쳤다. 그런데 교포 청년은 그 말을
'때려라'고 하는 줄 알고 개를 한번 발길로 찼다. 그러나
노파는 미친 듯이 무어라고 소리를 질러 댔고 겁이 난 청년은
삼십육계 줄행랑을 쳤다. 이 교포 청년이 'beat it'을 알아들은
것은 제대로 알아들었다. 그러나 그 뜻을 '개를 때려라'라고
해석한 것은 잘못이었다. 왜냐하면 beat it은 우리말 '저리 가!'의
속된 표현인 '꺼져'에 해당하는 말이기 때문이다.
같은 뜻으로 get lost!, scram, split, buzz off, take a walk등
많이 있다. 그 노파가 'go away' 라고만 말했어도 '저리가!'라는
뜻으로 알았을 테지만 속어인 beat it!이라고 했으니 갓 이민온
그 청년이 알아들을 리 만무했다. beat의 원래 뜻은 '때리다'이지만
'선수를 친다'는 뜻으로도 많이 쓰인다.
You beat me to her.라고 한다면 '네가 그녀한테 나보다 선수를
쳤구나'라는 뜻이 된다. beat는 또 속어로서 tired, '피곤하다'는
뜻으로도 쓰인다. You look beat.는 '너 피곤해 보이는구나'란
말이다. 또 beat me는 I don't know.와 같다.

'비밀은 secret또는 comfidence 이다. '밝히다'는 이런 경우 '말하다'라
는 의미이니까 tell도 괜찮겠지만 '비밀 속에 들어가는 것을 허용하다'라
고 바꿔 생각해 보면 let a person into one's secret또는 take a person
into one's confidence 등을 사용할 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다.

Reporter: Where did you get ideas for your fantasy movies?
Mr.Ray:Well, I had all the fears that a lot of kids have.
I was frightened of the dark, of the wind in the trees.
I imagined horrible monsters living in my bed.
Even Snow White gave me a nightmare.
But as I grew older, this kind of fear gradually changed to fascination.
This fascination gave me inspiration for my movies.
Reporter: How did you get interested in making movies?
Mr.Ray:My father had a movie camera.
He would take pictures of my family.
At twelve, I borrowed my father's camera and started making movies:
writing scripts for my family and filming family events.
That's how I started my first movie.

Tired of talking to my son about emptying his pockets before washday,
I told him that all the money I found would not be returned.

The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

When Amelia, one of my dearest friends, was ninety-nine, I, not knowing if she would live to be one hundred,
decided to ask the “big” question that is usually reserved for people who reach the age of one hundred.
I asked, “To what do you attribute your longevity?”
The usual answers we hear to that question are, “I didn't drink,” “I minded my own business,” and the like.
I had no idea what this healthy little ninety-nine-year-old would say.
What she said was profound.
It caused me to sit up and take notice: I have learned how not to be afraid.
Wow! What a statement! I realized―yes, this woman is fearless!
She didn't hide away at home and kept on moving out into the world despite the risks.
