When an increased patient load began to overwhelm our hospital's emergency
room, we initiated a triage system to ensure that the most critical people
were treated first. However, some of the less seriously ill patients
occasionally had to wait as long as several hours before they could be seen.
Complaints were common.
One day trauma cases abounded, and the wait was particularly long. A police
officer came in and approached the unit clerk. "I hate to tell you this."
he said apologetically, "but we just got an emergency call from your
waiting room."
환자 수가 늘어나 병원 응급실에 일손이 달리게 되자 가장 위급한 사람을 먼저
치료하기 위해 우선 순위를 정하는 제도를 실시했다. 그러나 덜 위급한 환자들은
여러 시간씩 기다려야 하는 경우가 있었다. 불만은 팽배했다.
어느 날 부상당한 환자들이 많아서 유난히 오래 기다려야 했다. 한 경찰관이
안으로 들어와 응급실 담당 직원에게로 갔다. "이런 말을 하기는 싫습니다."
그는 미안해하는 투로 말했다. "그러나 우리는 방금 이 병원 대기실에서
긴급 전화를 받았습니다."
