제출, 지급하다 to present before ~ for (consideration,
etc)'라든가 '~을 위한 장소를 찾다 (locate)'와 같은 뜻으로
사용되는 경우가 많습니다.
주식이나 채권에 투자하는 경우 여러분들이 제일 먼저 해야 할
일은 증권회사를 찾아 주문을 내는 일일 것입니다. 이 때 주문을
낸다는 말은 물론 make an order for ~를 사용하면 됩니다.
따라서 He made a purchase order for 100 Samsung common
stocks라 하면 그가 삼성 주식 보통주 100주를 매입하도록
신청했다는 말이 되는데 여기서 made a purchase order 대신에
place를 써서 He placed a buy order for ~와 같이 사용해도
무방합니다. 오히려 place가 쓰이는 문형을 더 많이 보시게
될지도 모르겠습니다.
이와 같이 place가 쓰인 것은 앞에서 말씀 드린 to present
before ~ for의 경우에 해당되는 것으로서 구체적으로 보면 He
presented an order before the broker to buy 100 Samsung
common stocks 와 같이 됩니다. 주문을 낸다는 말을 place an
order라 하는 만큼 발주 그 자체는 order placing이라 합니다.
한 가지 주의해야 될 것은 place an order를 사용하는 경우에
make an order를 사용할 수는 있지만 그 반대의 경우는
어색하다는 것입니다. 다시 말해 He made an order to his
subordinate not to be late any more. (그는 부하 직원에게 더
이상 늦지 않도록 주의하라는 명령을 내렸다.)에서 made를
placed로 바꾸어 쓰는 데는 무리가 있습니다. 따라서 기억하기
쉽게 place an order / order placing은 투자 부문에서 사용되는
용어로 별도로 분류해 생각하는 편이 좋습니다.

A growing number of domestic investment & trust, insurance,
and securities companies placed buy orders for more foreign
currency securities, leaving them with a total of $2.9
billion as of the end of last year on an outstanding basis,

점점 더 많은 수의 국내 투자신탁회사, 보험사, 증권회사들이
외화표시증권의 매수에 나섰으며 그 결과 이들 기관이 보유량은

여기서도 알 수 있듯이 place (a) buy order(s)가 매수 주문을
내다로 사용되었습니다만 해석을 조금 자연스럽게 하기 위해
'매수에 나섰다'라고 표현했습니다.
On an outstanding basis는 지난 번에 말씀 드린 outstanding
(눈에 띄는, 실체가 보이는)을 생각하시면 됩니다. 본 예문에서는
'투자 대상이 눈에 보이는 (visible) 상태에 있다'는 말이므로
실제로 발행되어 있는 (already issued) 상태의 증권을
의미합니다. 따라서 on a basis of ~ 또는 on a ~ basis (~
기준으로)와 함께 생각해 보면 발행되어 있는 외화표시증권
기준으로, 즉 '발행 기준'이 됩니다.
증권 관련 기사에서 outstanding issues라는 것을 자주 보게
되는데 이는 기발행되어 유통 중(in circulation / circulating
in the market)에 있는 (주식, 채권) 종목을 의미합니다. 신규
발행 종목(new issue)이나 채권의 경우 만기가 지나 원리금이
상환된(redeemed) 종목(retired issue)와 대비되어 사용되는
말이므로 잘 알아 두시기 바랍니다.

그런데 문제는; 저는 결혼하고 싶은데, 그이는 결혼하는 것이
두렵고, 혼란스러우며 이혼하게 될까봐 싫다고 해요. 저는 이혼을
했었고 아이가 셋입니다. 그이는 결혼한 적도 없고 아이도 없지요.

무역 수지나 경제 동향을 보도하는 기사는 대체적으로 몇 가지
수순을 밟는데 첫째는 현황, 두번 째는 과거 실적 대비, 그리고
뒤이어 그 원인 및 전망의 순서로 이어지게 되어 있습니다. 상기
예문은 그 중 첫번째에 해당하는 현황 설명의 부분으로서 이런
경우의 진행은 반드시 전년 대비 즉, 지난해의 동기간(the same
period)의 실적과 비교하는 것으로 이루어져 있습니다.
따라서 이와 같은 경우에는 따로 떼어서 외워 두어야 할 부분이
있는데 이는 바로 다음과 같은 것들입니다.

record는 우리말의 "기록적인"에 해당하는 표현입니다.

수출입 금액은 통관을 했느냐 안 했느냐에 따라 달라지므로
반드시 이러한 기준을 명시해서 발표하고 있습니다.
customs-cleared exports (또는 imports)는 보도에서 반드시
접하게 되는 것이므로 주의 깊게 보아 두시기 바랍니다.
were up OOO% 또는 ~ were down OOO%
상기 예문에는 year-on-year와 같이 쓰였지만 compared to the
same period last year라고도 쓰는 경우도 많습니다.
imports fell OOO% to OOO dollars또는 import grew a OOO% to
OOO dollars
이러한 것들은 거의 기계적으로 단어만 몇 가지 바뀌어 나올 뿐
그 틀에서 거의 변함 없이 그대로 등장하는 것들입니다. 한번만
신경 써서 외워 두시면 되는 것들입니다.
이와 같이 현황 설명에 추가로 붙게 되는 것은 다음에서와 같이
이것이 첫번째냐 두번째냐와 같은 기록 경신에 대한 사항입니다.
예문을 보시기 바랍니다.
(예문) It was the third consecutive month that South Korea
posted a trade surplus, following a 200 million dollar
surplus in November and a 2.3 billion dollar surplus in
December.
(해석) 이는 한국이 지난 해 11월 2억 달러 및 12월에 23억
달러에 이어 3개월 연속적으로 기록한 무역수지 흑자이다 (또는
직역을 하자면 흑자를 기록한지 3개월 째 되는 달이다).
여기서 중요한 것은 the third consecutive month 로서
우리말에서 몇 개월 연속 또는 몇 년 연속 등과 같이 말을 할 때
해당되는 표현입니다. 주의를 드리고 싶은 부분은 첫째 정관사
the가 쓰이고 있다는 점과 두번째 서수인 second, third, fourth
등이 나오고 있으며 뒤에 나오는 month 또는 year는 반드시
단수(singular)라는 점입니다. 이와 같이 따로 주의를 주지
않으면 나중에 영작을 할 때 분명히 a third consecutive month
또는 the third consecutive months와 같은 실수를 범하게
됩니다. 반드시 정관사+서수+단수의 형태로 등장한다는 것을 다시
한 번 기억해 두시기 바랍니다.
이와 같이 기록에 대한 설명이 끝나게 되면 나타나는 것은 바로
왜? 무엇 때문에 그와 같은 기록이 나오게 되었는가에 대한
분석과 더불어 향후 전망에 대한 내용입니다. 예컨대 Exports
were led by semiconductors, petrochemicals, machinery and
automobiles (수출을 주도한 것은 반도체, 유화, 기계 및 자동차
부문이었다) 정도의 문장이 뒤를 잇게 됩니다. 따라서 이
부분에서는 각 산업의 부문 즉, 반도체, 유화, 기계, 자동차와
더불어 조선(ship building) 철강 (steel), 섬유 (textile)과
같은 것들을 다시 한번 점검해 두시면 되겠습니다.
마지막으로 나타나는 부분은 향후에 대한 전망입니다. 한 가지
예문을 들어 보면
(예문) Exports will grow steadily in the coming months,
despite underlying concern over Asia's currency problems, it
said.
(해석) 수출은 아시아의 통화 위기에 대한 기본적인 우려에도
불구하고 향후 수 개월간 지속적으로 성장할 것으로 보인다.
여기서는 grow steadily, in the coming months를 비롯하여
upturn (하강하다가 상승), downturn (상승하다가 하강),
maintain current growth rate (현재 성장률 유지) 등과 같은
식의 상황이 있을 수 있습니다. 이와 같은 추세 변화에 대한
설명은 몇 차례 말씀 드린 바 있어 생략하도록 하겠습니다.
아무튼 다른 표현도 많겠지만 오늘 소개한 부분만이라도 확실하게
알아 두고 계시면 많은 도움이 될 수 있으리라고 생각합니다.

installment of the international Monetary Fund's $4.5 billion loan
before the end of the year, a top official said Saturday.
